Hot-Dip Galvanizing at Gulta Engineering Industries Ltd.: Technical Leadership and High-Quality Products
Promoting Steel Protection and Durability
Hot-Dip Galvanizing (HDG) is one of the fundamental pillars ensuring the durability and extended service life of steel structures.
The Gulta Co. Galvanizing Plant, located in the city of Misrata, was inaugurated in 2012 to meet the growing domestic demand for high-quality galvanized steel structures.
We take pride in operating a plant equipped with the latest galvanizing technologies, supplied and installed by the renowned Italian company Gruppo, ensuring adherence to relevant international quality standards.
The Basic Technical Principles of Zinc Corrosion Protection Mechanism of Steel in Hot Dip Galvanizing
Hot-Dip Galvanizing involves coating iron and steel components by immersion in molten zinc metal at a controlled temperature range of 440-450 C
- Protection Mechanism: The zinc forms a metallurgical bond with the steel, providing dual protection — a physical barrier that prevents corrosion agents from reaching the steel surface, and cathodic protection to the steel when the zinc coating is damaged, which corrodes preferentially at the expense of the steel substrate.
- Service Life: The durability of galvanized steel depends on environmental conditions. However, under moderate industrial environments, the expected lifespan typically could reach up to 30 years.
- Reference Applied Standards: Our galvanized steel products comply with the EN/ISO 1461 (International and European Standards).
Gulta Galvanizing Plant Facilities
- Molten Zinc Kettle: Made of special steel with the dimensions: Length 12.5 m x Width 1.2 m x Depth 2.0 m (D), enabling the galvanizing of up to 15 m long steel structures.
- Zinc Quality: High-purity zinc (99.995%) ensuring superior coating performance and longevity.
- Heating System: Dual-fuel combustion system (light fuel oil/diesel and natural gas) ensuring stable temperature control.
- Environmental Control Systems: Advanced acid fume and zinc vapor extraction systems ensuring environmental safety and regulatory compliance.
- Pre-Treatment Tanks: Specialized tanks for hydrochloric acid pickling and fresh-water rinsing and drying.
Operational Procedure: Steps to Guarantee Quality
The galvanizing process at Gulta Co. comprises a series of precisely controlled stages, ensuring optimal zinc adhesion and coating consistency:
- Surface Cleaning: HCl Acid pickling to remove rust, oxides, and impurities.
- Water Rinsing: Washing the materials with clean water to remove any remaining acid and material.
- Fluxing: Immersion in a zinc-ammonium chloride solution to prepare the surface for galvanizing.
- Drying: Complete moisture removal before immersion.
- Galvanizing: Immersion in molten zinc at 440 to 450 C while maintaining stable temperature conditions.
- Cooling: Air or water cooling to stabilize the coating.
- Finishing: Removal of excess zinc by grinding or manual finishing.
- Inspection & Measurement: Coating thickness is measured using a calibrated magnetic gauge to ensure conformity with international standards.
